For the second time in its still short life, the powerful play we commissioned Mark Wheeller to write, ‘I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die’, is on at the Edinburgh Fringe. Back in 2018 the talented young cast of Lloyd Theatre Arts, a Yorkshire-based youth theatre company, gained five star reviews for their imaginative and moving production. This year it’s back, and this time it’s virtual, in its TiE It Up Theatre filmed form as part of the online fringe festival.
For those that don’t know, it’s an incredible verbatim play, published by Bloomsbury/ Methuen Drama in 2017, and next year it will become a GCSE drama set text. It tells the story of the joyful life and tragic death of Dan, all in the words of his family and friends. It’s been studied, taught and performed across the UK and right around the world – before Covid hit there had been performances by young people as far away as Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Without Covid making live performances impossible, we’d never have had this moving new production professionally filmed, we’d never have been able to take the play on ‘virtual’ tour into schools in London and Scotland this summer, and we’d never have been able to be part of the online Edinburgh Fringe now.
Covid has taken so much from so many and in so many ways, but we also have many unexpected gifts as a result, and this is definitely one to celebrate!
